At BLDG, the number one question we get about solar installations for residential homes in the Greater Edmonton area is whether you can earn money back by producing green electricity that goes back into the grid. The answer is a resounding yes!
Albertans can get cash back by feeding energy back into the grid.
How to get more ROI on your Solar System through The Solar Club™
What is The Solar Club™?
The Solar Club™ is a non-government program created to help increase the earning potential of micro-generators importing and exporting electricity to the grid. Micro-generators are small-scale producers of electricity using renewable or alternative energy sources (solar, wind, etc.). Examples of micro-generators:
- Residential homeowners
- Farms
- Small commercial customers
How do I join The Solar Club™?
To qualify for the Solar Club, you must be a small micro-generator with a system capacity below 150 kW and be net-billed using a bi-directional cumulative meter. You also must be signed up as a customer of one of the local energy marketers in the Solar Club network. We recommend signing up here with Shared Value Energy.
As part of your application, you will need to provide documentation that confirms the following about your solar system:
- the year your solar system was installed,
- the number of solar panels installed,
- the capacity of your system (in kW DC).
If you cannot find documentation for your system, you can contact the Customer Care team at Solar Club for assistance.
How do I earn cash back as a club member?
If your solar system capacity is under 150 kW, you qualify as a micro-generator and can feed energy back into the grid based on summer rates of 30.0 ¢/kWh or winter rates of 12.5 ¢/kWh. The summer rate is for systems that generate more electricity than they are consuming, compared with the winter rate, which is for systems that consume more than they are generating.
In addition, everything that you import on an annual basis will earn you 2% cash back at the end of each year.
Bonus ROI Points: Earn by Selling Carbon Credits
In addition to the annual 2% cash back, your solar PV system may be eligible to generate carbon credits. Carbon credits can be sold into Alberta’s compliance market under various programs.
